The unloader or bypass valve on a pressure washer recirculates the water when the gun is close saving the pump from damage, the unloader valves often also have a one way valve to stop pressure coming back from the high pressure side and a pressure switch to tell the total stop devices (pcb etc) that the pressure washer had gone into bypass mode. there are generally 2 types of unloader bypass valve the trapped pressure type which hold the pressure in the hose and gun and the negative pressure type which hold the pressure away from the pump.
The water goes through the unloader valve at a fairly high speed and can wear it down over time, the seals inside the valve itself can wear and often get torn by small object going through such as brick dust, a tell tail one with brick dust is a scoring in the seat of the unloader valve, best thing to stop this kind of thing is to get a descent water filter at the front end of the pressure washer and this will save from damage from small particles.
